Our Story

Background

In 1987 the Weyburn and Area Council on Child Abuse organization was formed. A group of community minded individuals focused on combatting the growing issues of child abuse and neglect in Weyburn. Its focus was education, training, and therapy for professionals (doctors, nurses, and pastors), victims, and families of victims. By the early 1990's they had a vision of a family resource and support center in the downtown core that would have a more expanded approach to family support and education.

Our Beginning

In 1995 this dream became a reality when The Family Place opened their doors for the first time at 24 - 4th St. Weyburn, with the purpose of providing quality support to all cultural, social, and economic lines in Weyburn and the surrounding area.

Where We Are Now

Over time we have made two moves; first to a 20,000 square foot, rent-free space at the Souris Valley Hospital, and second to our current 10,000 square foot home at 24-4th St. Weyburn, which we purchased in 2005. Through time, our programs and services have changed and developed to meet the changing needs of our community, but improving the quality of life for children and families has stayed at the heart of what we do. Today we offer three preschools, including one for at risk children which offers additional family support paired with preschool, many programs, and several miscellaneous services.

Our Gratitude

The Family Place would like to thank everyone who has worked or volunteered at The Family Place throughout the years. There are too many to list but we want each to know that we would not be where we are without their contribution. No matter how big or small your role has been, it has contributed to making a difference in Weyburn and we say thank you! Thank you to our generous community for your continued support and heart for giving.  We are so grateful.  We could not do it without you!

Message for the Executive Director

Dawn Gutzke

~ A little hand pulls but can’t quite get the big door open. Mom shifts the car seat to her other arm and reaches out to help. As soon as the door cracks open the three-year-old slips inside, ripping her boots off and she beelines to hug the giant teddy bear. Mom exhales a happy sigh. The next half hour will be a perfect combination of joy-filled bonding and mayhem. ~

The above scenario is one of many I have the pleasure of experiencing here at the Family Place every day. My team and I work very hard to create a positive atmosphere where people feel safe and loved. A place they can come and just be themselves and where they are inspired to love and support others.

As someone who has experienced the safe haven of The Family Place myself when my son Noah’s speech was delayed, I understand how important The Family Place is. We all need love and support! The family is the cornerstone of our society, and no one can do it all on their own. It is my goal to help The Family Place embody these truths and to strive towards our goal of Improving the quality of life for families and children in Weyburn and the surrounding area.

Thank you for partnering with us by visiting our website. May you be encouraged and inspired by the positive things happening here at The Family Place and in the community of Weyburn.
